It takes 3 seconds for someone to form an opinion, which is why it’s essential to make the right impression and optimise your profile.
Optimising your profile makes it easier for your audience to learn about you and get your message clearly across. Learn how to make your profile your best reflection with our guide.
Optimise Your Profile Picture
Your profile picture needs to be professional and represent your brand well.
If you’re running a company page, set a high quality logo as the profile picture, but check that it reads easily at a small size. If you’re working as a consultant or offering individual service, however, consider using a clear photo rather than branding, to show a personal element. When choosing photo, opt for having professional head shots taken, if you can. Otherwise, choose a photo where you’re dressed professionally and with a clear background.
Make sure it fits the dimensions correctly too! Having an improperly cropped image is an easy way to come across as amateur.
Choosing Your Username and Industry
Pick a relevant, short and easy username that is memorable. This shouldn’t be too long or include lots of dots and dashes, or else it can be confusing for users to remember.
If your company name is taken, consider adding something short to the end, such as “uk” “insta” “official” “online” “co”. Try to avoid splitting a word with dots, as this can make it harder to appear under that search.
Include your industry category on profile so people can easily see what you do, as well. You’ll then appear under the “Explore Businesses” page for that category when people search in it.
If you’re setting up a Facebook account, make sure you have added a username as well as a page name, to make your URL easier and more accessible for those trying to find you. You can do so by going into your settings.
Optimise Your Profile Name
Make sure that your brand name is clear and capitalised in your profile name, if using platforms like Instagram or Linkedin.
Any easy way to get extra keyword points is by including your industry or keywords in your name, next to the brand name. This way it’ll bring your profile up when someone searches it. You can keep this looking professional by using “|” to separate the two. For example:
“BuzzGen | Social Media Agency”
Make Highlights
Highlights are a great way to bring attention to different categories, almost like a website menu.
For example you could show FAQs, shipping information, reviews, different product categories and more. Here you can store all the information someone may need before buying one of your products/services, saving them research time. If people are able to find this easily, they’re more likely to convert!
Make sure these have appealing covers that match your brand, rather than inconsistent posts. Consider using little icons to represent what the content is, such as stars for a review highlight and always try to keep the covers in your brand colours, to improve consumer recall.

Creating the Best Description
Your description should summarise what you do and why people should follow. Your page should have a clear focus on either educating, entertaining or informing people of your brand. Pushing just sales on socials NO LONGER WORKS as audiences want to develop a connection with a brand, so think on how you can provide them value. Either aim for a couple of lines or bullet points at max, depending on which layout suits your tone more.
Keep it short and simple, including a Call-to-action and keywords.
Let people know why to click your link as well. Can they learn more about the brand? Book a call? Always say what extra information your site will provide.
Profile Link
Creating a free Linktree (or similar platform) is the best way to make the most out of your profile link. By having a Linktree, you can make a second page which shows the user multiple pages that they can interact with, meaning you’re no longer limited to one link.
Add your other social media, website, contact options and relevant blogs as a minimum to maximise client touch points. You can see how we use ours below.
