What is Airchat and How Does It Work?

If you stay up-to-date with your social media news, you’ll see that everyone is talking about Airchat today: a new Social Media platform revolving around using audio instead of text.

In this article, we’ll be breaking down how you access Airchat, what it is and our predictions for the future of the platform, so keep reading to learn more!

What is Airchat?

Airchat is a new social media platform pitched by Naval Ravikant, with Tinder’s former CPO Brian Norgard as co-founder.

The platform completely moves away from the traditional methods of text posting (such as Twitter) and focuses on using your voice to make posts. Essentially, you say your post out loud and the AI will automatically transcribe it for you.

When viewing a post in your feed, you’ll have the option to read the text or listen to the original audio file. Similarly, when replying to a message you will also use your voice, mimicking a real interaction.

The idea behind Airchat was to capture a more natural conversation online, which is less edited than what you see on other platforms. It enables you to grasp the tone and voice behind a message, fostering a deeper understanding that might otherwise be missed through traditional text posts.

We’ve created an article showing our experience of using Airchat and how to navigate the platform, so be sure to check that out.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Reduced screen time with autoplay: The platform has the option to listen to the feed on autoplay, similar to a podcast or audiobook, meaning you can catch up on your friend’s news while on the move or working. This is a great feature for those wanting to step away from screens or reduce their social media use, but also stay connected with those they care about.
  • Real-Time Transcription: Airchat’s AI allows for real-time and accurate transcription of audio files, meaning the move to voice posts is smooth and easy for users.
  • Accessibility Benefits: Have a voice-based approach for the platform benefits many who may otherwise struggle with text-based platforms, such as those with mobility issues, blind users and more. The platform will help many with disabilities join in with conversations online going forward.

How Do You Access Airchat?

The platform is available on the app stores, but currently is invite only.

If you download the app and register your phone number, it’ll either display a screen saying you’re on the waitlist, or, if you have friends already on the platform, it’ll show you users that you can request an invite from. These users will be numbers it has identified in your contact list.

Upon registering to the app, it took us a couple of days to gain access, so it’s not a long wait. Check out our latest blog to see what we learned while using the platform.

We’re not too sure how long it’ll take before Airchat is rolled out for general use, but we’re excited to see more.

Is Airchat the future?

How much the platform grows going forward will greatly depend on how soon they’re able to roll out usage for mass/mainstream usage.

If the platform is able to roll out soon then we’re sure it will see a massive spike in downloads as Threads did last year, but whether or not users will stick around will depend on how user-friendly the feed becomes.

The use of audio in a feed definitely gives Airchat an advantage over other platforms. It’ll provide social media access to many with disabilities who would otherwise find it too much of a hassle or inaccessible.

All of this leads us to wonder how long it’ll be before Meta and Twitter start integrating this into their own feeds?

What do you think of Airchat? Do you think it’ll be as popular as Threads when it fully launches? Let us know in the comments!
